Why Moot Court?

Before even beginning my studies at CapLaw, I knew that I wanted my career to eventually lead me to working on post-conviction appeals. With this in mind, I did my research of extracurriculars that are available to law students and discovered Moot Court. At the beginning of my 1L year I had the honor of being selected as a Fellow for the 2021/2022 Moot Court year. Now, I have served as an advocate for the ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition team and competed in the Eastern District of New York where my team earned 4th Best Brief and placed in the Regional top 8. This experience has and continues to help me grow confidence and skills in oral advocacy and research and writing.

Why Moot Court?

Last year as a fellow I was able to learn and grow so much as a student, and I’m looking forward to learning even more this year as an advocate and member of the board! Moot court really brought me out of my shell and helped me gain confidence in my skills, and I made some great friendships as well. Getting the opportunity to argue in front of judges is invaluable experience that is hard to find in a classroom. I can’t to see where it takes me in my 2L year!

Why Moot Court?

Moot Court allows me to gain practical skills and be coached by skilled advocates in an environment without the stakes affecting actual lives.  It helps build skills that are relevant to any part of law: research, brief writing, and oral presentation.  The added challenge of interruptions with questions is a great way to work through unexpected situations and think on my feet.

Why Moot Court?

When I was nine years old and all the other boys wanted to be a policeman or firefighter, I wanted to be a Supreme Court justice. That passion never left me, so when I came to CapLaw I sought out the Moot Court team to not only understand appellate law, but acquire the skills necessary to be an effective litigator. In my 2L year, I had the honor of competing as an advocate on one of two CapLaw teams in the Child & Family Moot Court Competition where our team were Quarter-Finalists. I am thrilled to serve this year as an advocate for the ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition team and as this year's Associate Justice for Fundraising & Marketing as our team grows to be the nationally competitive team I know we are!

Why Moot Court?

I chose to participate in Moot Court to gain a deeper understanding of the appellate court system and its intricacies. Additionally, Moot Court provided an excellent opportunity to enhance my legal research skills, as I delved into case law, statutes, and legal principles to build strong arguments. Furthermore, I recognized the importance of honing my public speaking abilities, as effective communication is vital in the legal profession. Moot Court allowed me to refine my oral advocacy skills and build confidence in presenting complex legal arguments in a clear and persuasive manner.
